Was 40 days harsh?

Seeing this week that Peterjon Carberry got a 40 day ban for mistaking the winning post at Uttoxeter, leading him to drop his hands. I feel about 25 would be a fairer punishment. If you have any views, please leave a comment at the bottom of the page. To see it, go on Racingpost.com and click on Racing Post Television on the Media Centre, scroll down the list to about 1/3 of the way and it is called "Uttoxeter Shocker".
The French Guineas is tomorrow's feature.
My selections are: POZYC - NAP (3.25 Kilarney), Zoowraa (2.08 Longchamp), Private Story E/W (2.00 Market Rasen), Chorizo (3.30 Market Rasen), Hail Caesar (4.00 Market Rasen), Kerrys Requiem (3.10 Ripon), Space War (3.40 Ripon), Baybshambles (5.10 Ripon), Carter (2.20 Stratford), Marley Roca (3.20 Stratford) and The Merry Giant (3.50 Stratford)

Good Luck

  1. Will,

Pozyc was a disappointment after looking good and Chorizo ran like it had eaten some! One of those days, I guess.

Re the Carberry ban, it seems to me that young inexperienced jockeys always get hit hard by the powers that be. I can think of a few examples re taking the wrong course. If there are no peculiar betting patterns and on balance it looks like a genuine mistake due to inexperience I feel some leniency is called for. A couple of extra points for consideration:-
    Was it a first offence?
If it was a senior jockey with "heavyweight" supporters, likely to appeal and take that process as far as possible, would the ban have been as long?

I could also raise the inconsistency argument heard so often in football regarding refereeing decisions. What's worse for the image of the sport and the welfare of horses - an inexperienced jockey stopping riding after thinking he's done enough or a senior jockey whipping the backside off a tired horse to just get home in a big race? (Or indeed the champion jockey bullying a reluctant horse for at least a circuit before finally forcing it home in front e.g. Jaunty Journey the other day)

In racing as in life generally your status and connections count for a lot!
